The Ion Blasters served as Optimus Prime's signature weapon during Seasons 1 and 2 of Transformers: Prime. Unlike Energon Blasters which fire regular energon, these weapons fire blasts of ionized particles, making them more powerful.
Ultra Magnus also possessed two Ion Blasters. After being upgraded to a stronger body by the Forge of Solus Prime, Optimus got a new, more powerful Ion Blaster and a machine gun.

The weapon is a little more powerful than the Neutron assault rifle, but with twice the rate of fire, it makes a suitable weapon for the Leader class.
